HOW TO FIND US

We are located at 323 W Main Street in Lead.

FROM RAPID CITY
  • Take I-90 W approximately 27.8 miles to EXIT 30 (DEADWOOD/LEAD) in Sturgis.
  • Turn LEFT onto US-14A (BOULDER CANYON RD) and drive 12.3 miles to Deadwood.
  • Remain on US-14A through town to Pine Street.
  • Turn LEFT onto US-85 / PINE ST and drive one block to Sherman Street.
  • Turn RIGHT onto US-85 / SHERMAN ST. Continue to follow US-85 approximately 3.2 miles to Lead.

FROM MT RUSHMORE
  • Take US-385 approximately 36.6 miles to Pluma intersection.
  • Turn LEFT toward Lead onto US-85. Continue 1.5 miles

FROM SPEARFISH
  • Take I-90 east approximately 5 miles to Exit 17 (DEADWOOD/LEAD)
  • Turn right on US-85 S and follow to Deadwood.
  • US-85 will merge with US-14A upon entering Deadwood.
  • Remain on this road to Pine Street. Turn left on Pine and drive one block to Sherman Street.
  • Turn RIGHT onto US-85 / SHERMAN ST. Continue to follow US-85 approximately 3.2 miles to Lead.

FROM STURGIS
  • TAKE US-14A (BOULDER CANYON RD) south and drive 12.3 miles to Deadwood.
  • Remain on US-14A through town to Pine Street.
  • Turn LEFT onto US-85 / PINE ST and drive one block to Sherman Street.
  • Turn RIGHT onto US-85 / SHERMAN ST. Continue to follow US-85 approximately 3.2 miles to Lead.

FROM NEWCASTLE, WY
  • Take US-85 north for approximately 50 miles.
  • Turn right at the traffic light at the intersection of US-85/GLENDALE DRIVE onto US-85/MAIN STREET.

PARKING

Street parking is limited on Main Street in front of the Museum. However, there is a free Municipal Parking lot across the street and another one behind the Museum on Julius Street. There is also plenty of parking at the Homestake Visitor Center (160 W Main Street) approximately two blocks from the Museum. There is one handicap accessible parking space on Main Street near the front entrance of the Museum.

HISTORIC HOMESTAKE OPERA HOUSE
Known as the Jewel of the Black Hills, the Lead Opera House has been a majestic landmark in the small mining town of Lead, South Dakota for nearly a century. It is located next door to the Museum. www.leadoperahouse.org

HOMESTAKE VISITOR CENTER
Perched on the edge of the historic Open Cut, the center offers surface tours of the Homestake Gold Mine and features a short informative film regarding Homestake, historic and educational memorabilia, and gift shop. www.homestaketour.com

LEAD MAIN STREET
On historic Main Street, you will find unique stores offering jewelry, collectibles and antiques, restaurants, art galleries, and the Historic Homestake Opera House. PRESIDENTS PARK
This beautiful park is nestled in the hills just four miles south of Lead. Our nation's presidents take the form of huge sculptures created by internationally known artist and sculptor David Adickes. www.presidentspark.com

DEADWOOD
Deadwood is just 3 miles from Lead and offers a variety of entertainment ranging from casinos and shops to wonderful restaurants and museums. Trolleys provide convenient transportation throughout the town. Special tours are available of the historic Mt. Moriah Cemetery, where Wild Bill and Calamity Jane are buried. ADAMS MUSEUM AND HOUSE
The Adams House, built in 1892, is an elegant Victorian mansion which became the Adams House Museum following a detailed restoration. TATANKA: STORY OF THE BISON
Tatanka stands as a centerpiece for the Native American and white cultures in the area. A larger than life bronze sculpture featuring bison pursued by Native American horseback riders perches high on a hill with a breathtaking view of the northern Black Hills. DAYS OF '76 HISTORIC MUSEUM
The Days of '76 is a celebration of Deadwood's history from 1923 onward. The Museum features Old West and Native American artifacts and over 60 historic horse-drawn vehicles, including the original Deadwood Stage. www.daysof76.com/museum/

GEORGE S. MICKELSON TRAIL
This spectacular, 114 mile long trail winds through the hills from Lead to Edgemont, SD. Its gentle slopes and easy access allow people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the beauty of the Black Hills. Following old railroad beds, the Trail has more than 100 converted railroad bridges and 4 hardrock tunnels. SPEARFISH CANYON
Designated a National Scenic Byway. It is located on Highway 14A and twists through a 19 mile gorge. Enjoy the cool freshness of Spearfish Creek, Bridal Veil Falls and Roughlock Falls along the canyon. This is a great place to fish, hike, bike, or picnic. www.spearfishcanyon.com
